The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
was founded in 1997 by Tim and Karrie League at 409 Colorado St, in an Austin,
Texas warehouse-district building that was being used as a parking garage. The
company began as a second-run movie theater, and distinguished itself by the
unusual food and drink service offered inside the theater. The seating is
arranged with rows of cabaret style tables in front of each row of seats, with
an aisle between each row to accommodate waiter service. Customers write their
orders on slips of paper, which are picked up by black-clad waiters moving
quietly between the rows. Soon after opening, the original downtown theater
began offering occasional unusual programming such as silent movies scored by
local bands playing live accompaniment, food-themed films such as Like Water for
Chocolate served with a dinner matching the meals shown on screen, and
retrospectives of various directors and stars.
In 2001, the Leagues renovated a four-screen art-house theater at 2700 Anderson
Lane in North Austin which had recently closed, and opened it as an Alamo
Drafthouse which specialized in first-run movies. With this new Alamo Drafthouse
Village, the downtown location ceased showing second-run movies and began to
concentrate almost exclusively on unusual programming including classics, cult
classics, independents, documentaries, special guest appearances, and audience
participation shows.
In 2003, the Alamo Drafthouse moved even further north, to 13729 Research Blvd
in Cedar Park. The Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek has seven screens, all dedicated
to new movies. Almost simultaneously, the Alamo granted their first franchise,
which opened in the West Oaks Mall in Houston, Texas.
In July of 2004, Tim and Karrie League sold the company, including the brand,
intellectual property and rights to all future Alamo Drafthouse expansion to its
then current CEO Terrell Braly and two other partners, retaining only the
original downtown location, the Alamo Village and the Alamo South Lamar, a six
screen theater opened in 2005, to run as licensees of the Alamo Drafthouse
Cinemas Ltd. Just prior, in the summer of 2004, the largest Alamo (Westlakes)
opened in San Antonio, Texas with nine screens. Mr. Braly resigned and sold his
interests in October 2005. Since October 2005, the new company, under CEO and
partner John Martin, has opened theaters in Katy, Texas and has plans for a
new-build theater in the Rio Grande Valley, scheduled to open in 2007, and
others outside of Texas. A second San Antonio theatre is underway (Park North),
which will have 6 screens and is scheduled to open in fall 2008.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Village opened in May of 2001. A four screen complex
that original opened in the early 1970's, the Village features 4 screens of new
release movies, weekly midnight movies, Videoke, and the Rocky Horror Picture
Show.
The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema South Lamar was opened in March of 2005 and features
six screens of new release movies, the Saturday Morning Film Club, the Dionysium,
and numerous premieres, special events and food and film feasts.
Alamo Drafthouse Downtown on Colorado St.
will be closing its doors after
a final triple-feature on June 27, 2007. The movie theater will be moving
to Sixth Street in the newly renovated Ritz Theater. While we're looking
forward to the new digs, we want to remember and celebrate the old Alamo
Drafthouse that we've been visiting for the past 10 years. And we'd like
you to help us.
We'd like to hear your favorite stories about a movie, festival or event
you attended at Alamo Downtown, or read about your favorite memories, or
look at photos you took at Alamo. If you've ever visited the theater and
have something to share, we'd love to have you share it with us on June
25.
Celebrity Guests
Since opening our doors in 1997, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has been committed
to bringing filmmakers and stars from across the globe to share stories, offer
advice, and on rare occasions, lambast the audience and perform impromptu song
and dance numbers. In any case, we feel that this greatly enhances the film
experience, and gives everyone who attends an intimate look behind the scenes of
the movies we love.
